Isaac Babcock, whom everyone calls Icky, isn’t looking forward to starting sixth grade. Icky & CeCe and the Mysterious Mr. Thuan is the kind of book I wish I had when I was in grammar school. It tackles real life issues of social justice, discrimination and prejudice in a way that does not come off preachy. CeCe and Icky are the type of kids we all knew in school and their dialogue and actions are highly believable which draws you right into their adventures. It was the kind of book that made you sad to leave the characters at the end and left me anxiously awaiting the next book in the series to see what predicaments this duo will get in next as they learn about life at the same time. Two students, Icky and CeCe begin middle school with trepidation. Their experiences hold your attention. The book portrays realistic student lack of thinking about the effect of some behaviors on others. Mr. Thuan is the butt of some of their pranks . When the kids learn the mysteries of Mr. Thuan's past, they learn lessons of respect and compassion and pass their learning on to others. They learn Compassion and sharing and so will the young reader.
